Full recap
The finance world gathered in Bangkok this week for IMF-World Bank meetings, and apparently China is no longer the scary thing keeping central bankers up at night. Now it is debt, AI, and Ukraine. Progress, sort of. When your crisis rotation moves from 'China trade war' to 'everything else simultaneously,' that's not reassurance, that's just a wider panic radius. Speaking of AI, the HSBC CEO decided to be the adult in the room and remind everyone that not every concrete box full of servers is a guaranteed goldmine. Shocking, we know. Turns out slapping the word 'AI-adjacent' on a data center does not automatically make it a good investment. Who could have predicted that capital misallocation would follow a hype cycle? Literally everyone, but here we are. Anthropic is apparently the last big IPO hope for 2026 after OpenAI punted on its public debut. So the AI trade is now pinning its Wall Street dreams on one company to ring the bell before New Year's. No pressure. The prediction markets on Kalshi have spoken, which is almost poetic: a betting market deciding the fate of an AI company while sportsbooks are busy doing the same thing for the NFL. Defense stocks are moving premarket, which is the market's polite way of saying the geopolitical situation remains 'elevated.' RTX and Northrop Grumman popping while finance chiefs debate Ukraine policy in Bangkok is the kind of dark symmetry that would make a great editorial cartoon. General Motors and Steel Dynamics are also in the mix, because apparently making cars and steel is now correlated with making missiles. Everything is connected, nothing is boring. On the sports side, the CBS Sports feed this week was essentially three consecutive ads dressed up as news. BetMGM wants to give you $1,500. DraftKings wants to give you $200 and a free NBA League Pass. A coalition of sportsbooks is offering over $3,000 in 'bonuses' for Chiefs-Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. At some point the sportsbooks are just paying you to exist near their app. The house always wins, but apparently it needs to buy your attention first. The one actual sports story in the mix: Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is returning to practice after recovering from a gunshot wound suffered in the offseason. The fact that this was the only real news buried under three gambling promo articles says something about the current sports media economy that we will leave as an exercise for the reader. So here is your week in review: finance chiefs are nervous about debt and AI, data centers are not automatically good, the last AI IPO is loading, defense contractors are thriving, and sportsbooks are throwing thousands of dollars at NFL bettors while a college kid quietly gets back on the practice field after getting shot. Just another Sunday.
Highlights
- HSBC CEO delivers the least popular conference take: not all data centers are created equal, and the AI infrastructure gold rush has some very non-golden picks in it.
- Sportsbooks collectively offered over $3,000 in sign-up bonuses for one NFL game this weekend, which is either extremely generous or a very expensive customer acquisition strategy - probably both.
- Ahmad Hardy returning to practice is the most overlooked story of the week, buried under a avalanche of gambling promos - the kid got shot and is back on the field, and that deserves more than third billing behind DraftKings copy.
- Anthropic is carrying the entire AI IPO narrative for 2026 on its back, which is a lot of weight for a company whose main competitor just decided the public markets could wait.
- Defense stocks moving premarket while global finance chiefs debate Ukraine in Bangkok - the market prices in the chaos before the diplomats finish their coffee.
