Full recap
Good morning. The market alarm is going off and the pre-market movers board is lighting up like a pinball machine: Tesla, SpaceX, Alcoa, CoreWeave, Travelers. Pick your poison. The theme today is velocity, things moving fast, upward or sideways, with varying degrees of justification. Harvard's endowment just posted a 27 percent return for fiscal 2026, its best since 2021, with SpaceX sitting in the top holding slot. So yes, the institution that charges $90,000 a year to teach you to question capitalism is quietly getting rich off Elon's rockets. The irony is structural at this point. Meanwhile China is now spending nearly as much of household income on healthcare as Americans do. The IMF politely suggested the government could spend more to boost consumption. Translation: people are broke, sick, and saving too hard because they don't trust the system. Sound familiar? Some problems are not geographically specific. Alcoa is showing up in both the after-hours and pre-market mover lists, which means aluminum had a big night and nobody noticed because everyone was watching the SpaceX headlines. Alcoa never gets the glory. Alcoa is the J.B. Hunt of metals. Speaking of J.B. Hunt, the trucking giant also made the after-hours list. Freight data is one of the last honest economic signals left, and right now it is saying something. Whether that something is good or bad depends on which analyst you pay to interpret it. NFL Week 6 is here and the betting industrial complex is fully operational. Texans over Jaguars in London is the featured upset pick. C.J. Stroud is apparently worth backing across an ocean, which is either a strong conviction play or a sign that London just makes everyone feel brave. Fantasy managers are white-knuckling their lineups with Josh Allen leading PPR rankings amid bye-week carnage and injury chaos. Running an NFL roster right now has the same energy as managing a venture portfolio in a rate-hike cycle. Everyone is hurt, everyone is expensive, and your best asset is always questionable. Bottom line: Harvard is compounding, Alcoa is moving, China is sick and saving, and somewhere in London a Texans fan is ordering a warm beer and feeling cautiously optimistic. Start your engines.
Highlights
- Harvard's endowment up 27 percent with SpaceX as top holding - turns out the best hedge against student loan debt is owning the rocket company
- Alcoa made BOTH the after-hours AND pre-market movers list, proving that boring industrial metals will outlast every hype cycle you have ever fallen for
- China spending as much income on healthcare as Americans is either a convergence story or a warning label for every country that lets insurance companies run the show
- C.J. Stroud in London as an upset pick is the Week 6 version of a leveraged bet - high conviction, one time zone removed from reality, probably fine
- Fantasy football injury chaos plus bye weeks equals the same decision fatigue as rebalancing a portfolio mid-correction - nobody wins clean
